Here at StaxUp Storage, we know our success is due to our wonderful team. The care they give our self storage renters is unparalleled and we want to highlight their milestones along the way. Below is an interview with Sun City, CA team member Alisha Carey, who is celebrating her 4-year anniversary with StaxUP Storage this week.
You can find Alisha at StaxUP Storage – Homeland.
Peter: How did you start working in self storage?
Alisha: I got started in self storage in 2006. I did not want to be away from my kids at night and this gave me the chance to be with them. Once I started, I became interested in all aspects of it. It allowed me to be around different kinds of people and interact with people from my community. It allowed me to grow in my customer service skills and made me feel good knowing that I could be there to listen when they were in a bad place.
Peter: What’s the best thing you’ve learned while working for StaxUP?
Alisha: Compassion, understanding and ownership. I am compassionate towards my tenants and their situations; I understand what they are going through and help them fulfill their needs. I was given the opportunity to bring up a facility and get it to where it needed to be. The hard work and dedication it takes to run a facility has been rewarding and allowed me to feel like I own my property.
Peter: What is your favorite self storage story?
Alisha: I have 2 actually; One tenant I had was a single mom. She worked super hard to take care of her 3 kids and her car was stolen. All her kids’ school stuff was in the car. We had just finished and delivered all the supplies from the back to school drive so I had nothing left to offer. My husband and I decided that it was not ok for them to go without, so we went and bought 3 backpacks and filled them with supplies. I called her and asked her to bring the kids down for a surprise. We presented her with the backpacks and the kids were so excited and happy. She was beside herself with joy and tears and was so grateful. The look on their faces is why I am so happy and proud to be doing what I do.
Another time is our SGOL (Strat Gifts of Love) event. We have an attendee with 2 little girls and they needed jackets. We were able to get the girls a jacket for the winter and present it to them at the event. They were so excited and happy to have a warm jacket for the winter. They had come back the following year and wore the same jackets. We have had the ability to watch them grow over the last several years and they are so grateful. It is moments like this that give some perspective on what really matters in life.
Peter: What are your hobbies when you aren’t at your facility?
Alisha: Country music concerts, amusement parks, cooking, playing with my fur babies, dance competitions with my daughter and sports games with my boys and volunteering with different groups.
Peter: What’s your favorite thing to do in Homeland?
Alisha: Attend events at the community center. They host all different kinds of activities throughout the year and it is a really great time.
Peter: What’s your favorite restaurant in Homeland?
Alisha: Santiago’s Tacos hands down. Amazing Mexican food!
Peter: Would you like to give a shout-out to anybody?
Alisha: A couple people actually, My family, for being supportive and understanding with my job. For knowing that I work super hard to make sure they are taken care of and, even though I have to miss things sometimes, I am always there in spirit. Don and Randy, thank you for trusting me and knowing that I could do what I do. You have always been there and supported me, knowing even though at times I didn’t think I could, that I could do it and so much more. It has been an honor to be trusted to take over a store and make it what it is today. I will forever be grateful! Tony and Jenn Allen, thank you for helping guide me and coach me and lead me to where I am today. You are a great team and I wouldn’t be where I am today if you had not have said “you’re hired” and helped me all these years. Julie Merry, thank you for offering me the position I am in as Senior Team Member. Thank you for trusting that I could take on this task and accomplish new and great things. I look forward to learning so much! And last but not least Rick Davis, he has been here through the whole ride. I appreciate you listening and offering advice and being there for me through it all. We make a great team and I look forward to many more years!
