Here at StaxUP Storage, we know our success is due to our wonderful team. The care they give our renters is unparalleled and we want to highlight their milestones along the way. Below is an interview with Alpine, CA team member Sam Arias, who is celebrating his 4-year anniversary with StaxUP Storage.
You can meet Sam at StaxUP Storage in Alpine, CA.
Peter: How did you start working in self storage?
Sam: I am a man of faith and I strongly believe that I did not just happen to run into this industry. My background is marketing and Indian gaming and managed several casinos locally for 10 years. When my now wife and I decided to form a family, we prayed for a change in my career. I was searching various management opportunities in San Diego, and there it was property management, stable and family oriented. Did I mention normal work hours? LOL! I’d never thought about Self Storage but it just felt right, and definitely worth a try. I thought to myself, if I was able to sell dreams in a casino, I could sell anything. Four years later, I could have never made a better choice.
Peter: What’s the best thing you’ve learned while working for StaxUP?
Sam: Being new to the industry, there were many new things to learn, from how much can you fit in a 3×5 unit, Wow! (Good thing I was good at the game of Tetris), to fixing elevators, garage doors, and everything in between. Most importantly I have learned that there IS such thing as a Team or Teamwork in the workplace. StaxUP has one of the best teams I have ever worked with!
Peter: What is your favorite self storage story?
Sam: Wow, so many stories… I could refer back to a little book we started in downtown “Chronicles of a Self Storage Manager”… But I think my favorite is always the one when you help the customer going through a hard time. Moving is hard as it is, whether it’s because you are relocating, getting a dream home or eviction, marriage or divorce, and even worst that passing of a loved one. The truth is that moving is never fun, and that’s when we come in, and help to make things smoother. We not only have storage space, packing supplies, and moving trucks, but also an ear, at times even two. I enjoy being able to be there for the customer and lend an ear, have answers, options, solutions, as well as the resources at hand to better assist them. At the end of the story, we not only make customers, we establish a great relationship! Let me add, there is no better marketing than word of mouth, especially in tight-knit communities such as Alpine.
Peter: What are your hobbies when you aren’t at your facility?
Sam: Photography, that is one of my main and lifelong hobbies, and now with a wife and 3 kids, you can just imagine the number of photos I can add up in a year!
Peter: What’s your favorite thing to do in Alpine?
Sam: Alpine is such a relaxing place, I love taking the family to the park, play outdoors, or simply having a bite at one of the local joints.
Peter: What’s your favorite restaurant in Alpine?
Sam: Man, so many great places to eat around here, but I will have to say Alpine Beer Co. Pub. (Alpine Tavern & Grill and Janet Montana’s Café tied in 2nd place).
Peter: Would you like to give a shout-out to anybody?
Sam: Most definitely, to my bro Adam Martin, and Ana Padilla… the two co-team members who I first worked with here at Strat, and best team ever. Together we formed a great team and learned a lot from each other. We were unstoppable! Great memories of the Downtown property, and a friendship for life.
