On Saturday, May 12th, StaxUP Storage in Sun City in Menifee, California had their annual garage sale! This event not only gave customers the chance to clean, organize, and sell items from their units, but also a chance to get to know their fellow tenants and facility managers. StaxUP Storage in Sun City Manger Dave Luyben and Assistant Manager Nick Clarkson hosted the event. We caught up Nick to hear more about how the day went.
“We started a bit late, but we had really good success. A lot of people sold a lot of stuff. We did a nice barbecue for everyone, so we had plenty of food. People kept asking if they could buy a hot dog, but I told them ‘No, it’s free!’”
Nick explained that due to the shot notice of the event, he was surprised by the number of people who participated, “There were definitely more people than I was expecting. We had nine tenants participate. There was also one participant that wasn’t a tenant.”
The event went from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and had tenants and shoppers up at the crack of dawn, ready to sell and buy!
“Everyone was already there when we got here. The participants were set up at 7:00 AM. Everyone was eager to sell things that day. We had people park in the parking lot and we left our gate open so they could freely go in and out. We don’t usually do that, but for our special events we will do that.”
Nick said there was a steady flow of shoppers picking through items throughout the rest of the day.
“I actually went along all day asking people if they were selling things. They just kept nodding their heads. I was surprised how successful it was. One lady basically sold everything she had. She only had a few items left, so she probably had the most success of anyone that day”
While Nick admits that he was surprised the day went so well, he also said the weather couldn’t have been more perfect.
“It was a cool day, which is really nice. It was a little bit gloomy, but it was cool which I think is important, because it can get really hot out here. I was pretty lucky since in the summer it can get up to 105 degrees out here.”
While the weather may have been mild, Nick made sure that the coffee was hot, and that Krispy Kreme donuts were available for everyone in the morning.
For lunch, the facility provided grilled hot dogs, chips, and ice-cold lemonade for all. Nick said that one surprising moment of the day came when he was grilling, “A tenant wanted me to burn her hotdogs to a crisp. I kept burning it and she kept wanting it more and more burnt until it was completely charred! She ate the whole thing and loved it, haha!”
Another surprising incident involved a tenant who had an item that people wanted but couldn’t get their hands on.
“I had one person that had this item that everyone wanted to buy, but he said that it wasn’t for sale. It was a really old advertisement for a restaurant. Basically a cartoon drawing, like an old advertisement drawn by hand. It was probably worth some money.”
Since garage sales are always popular in the area, Nick said that they feel it’s a great way to express his gratitude to his tenants for their business. “We like to show our customers that we appreciate them. Show them that we will help them sell their stuff, even if it means they will have less items to store. We want to help them out.”
We always encourage our facilities to let their customers know that their business is valued. At StaxUP Storage in Sun City, they go above and beyond by hosting multiple events every year.
“It’s all of our ideas. We usually do a garage sale yearly, but we take the initiative on how we are going to do it. We actually do a lot of fun events for our customers, which I know is something that not a lot of facilities do.
“I’m glad I work for a company that has taken the thought to go ahead and do something like that for their customers,” Nick said.
With the help of his manager, Dave Luyben, Nick put on a fantastic event. We can’t wait to hear all about their upcoming events celebrating holidays like Veterans Day and Halloween. Their commitment to putting on regular events really makes a difference in the satisfaction of customers. We hope their stellar example of customer appreciation will encourage other facilities to add more events to their calendars in the future!
